City Lab, a do tank based in Pittsburgh asked us to help them get a clear view on why people are moving to Pittsburgh, and then from the residents perspective, how people feel about new mostly white creative folk moving into their so-called ‘blighted’ neighborhoods. We produced a program and conducted the research with new arrivals and pulled together some valuable insights that helped frame their work in the area of Garfield. We also ran workshops with local people to get deeper understanding of how they felt about new people moving in, and what that meant for them. For Black people in Pittsburgh, historical changes had left a longer term legacy of deprivation.
